Newcastle Utd Women FC vs Barnsley FC Ladies

Bekkie H7 May 2019 - 18:54

Reds bag all 3 points to finish fourth in the 2018/19 FAWNL Div 1 North final League game of the season.

The team have travelled North to this final game of the 2018/19 FA WNL Division 1 North season in the luxury of Yorkshire Rose coaches, arriving fresh and looking fit during warm up.

Both teams have Mascots as they walk out and line up prior to kick off.

3 min first chance of the game goes to Barnsley when Lissa Woodhouse is fed through by Kathryn Smith but her lobbed effort goes narrowly wide
5 min a Newcastle shot from distance eludes Skye Kirkham 1-0 Newcastle
6 min another Newcastle chance this time a header from close range goes over the crossbar
13 min Barnsley starting to find their rhythm and the Newcastle keeper is tested twice making two good saves
17 min Barnsley break forward, but a low right angled shot by Lissa Woodhouse is saved low down by the Newcastle keeper.
22 min Lucy Turner puts in a harsh but fair challenge and all the Newcastle players stop expecting a free kick but now whistle so Reds keep going and Drew Greene sees her effort saved again.

32 min two good corner deliveries are well defended by Newcastle.
40 min long stoppage as a Newcastle player receives treatment following a foul challenge. Newcastle blaze the free- kick over the crossbar.
45 min with the half drawing to a close, Danielle Whitham makes progress down the right and whips in a perfect ball across the face of goal and there is Drew Greene, sponsored by iVision, to gratefully stick it into the back of the net. 1-1.
Half-Time Newcastle 1 Barnsley 1, with Drew Greene equaliser cancelling out an early Newcastle goal.
49 min Barnsley substitution with Amy Woodruff coming on for Lissa Woodhouse
61 min Barnsley trying to get on top but neither side is able to make many clear cut chances
62 min Sophie Bell is substituted for Lindsey Tugby

63 min Darcie Greene has a good effort saved low down,
67 min good play down the right as Darcie Greene plays square into Amy Woodruff, for her shot to be blocked only as far as Kathryn Smith who blazes her half volley over.
70 min Amy Woodruff in the clear, only the keeper to beat, but she makes two fine saved to deny a certain goal. Newcastle break forward and after a goal mouth scramble the Reds manage to eventually clear the danger.

72 min Amy Woodruff shows great strength to battle to the Newcastle goal line before poking it across the face of goal and with Drew Greene lurking the defender turns it into her own goal, 1-2 Barnsley
78 min final Barnsley substitution with Rebecca Hornsey replaced by Mollie Crump
82 min Amy Woodruff has the ball in the back of the net, but the Assistant referee rules it offside.
84 min Skye Kirkham is brave as she comes out to smother the ball
Full-Time Newcastle Utd Women 1 Barnsley FC Ladies 2. Now that’s how to finish a season with a dogged performance in the second half to ensure the journey back from the North East is a happy one with all 3 points in the bag. With Brighouse Town winning at Leeds Utd though it means the Reds have finished 4th with 41 points (12 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses), not a bad season considering the losing streak at the start. Well Done Ladies.

Cawa Coffee Players of the match were Annie Ward and Kathryn Smith

Next Fixture is the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Cup final against Huddersfield Town Ladies again next Sunday at the New York Stadium Rotherham 3pm KO. Hope to see you there.
