Lest we Forget: Reds observe a respectful Silence before five from five performance


With the two minutes silence beautifully observed the captains came together for the toss which Lucy Turner lost but surprisingly Morecambe decided to play into the sun in the 1st half. So it was Barnsley FC Ladies that got the match under way.


5 mins gone and Darcie Greene got the first shot away which was easily picked up by the Morecambe goal keeper at her left hand post.
6 min Amy Woodruff broke down the right wing beating the left back to cross from the goal line but there were no Barnsley players in the box and it went through for a throw.
7 min and first real attack by Morecambe resulted in a shot from the edge of the area by No14 which Skye Kirkham dived and pushed wide for a corner which was cleared away to Drew Greene who broke through the Morecambe defence and under pressure from a chasing defender got a little clip just outside the area staying on her feet but then lost her balance as she tried to control the football, all appeals for a penalty waved away.
11 min Barnsley were awarded a free kick 28 yards out following a high knee that caught Lissa Woodhouse in the midriff, Sophie Crosby took towards the back post where Annie Ward rose to head wide.
14 min Morecambe free kick from the end of the centre circle when Annie Ward had pushed the centre forward to head first. The Free kick was lifted into the box but a good Barnsley defensive line of Annie Ward and Lucy turner caught No14 offside.
17 min Sophie Bell held up the ball then crossed into the penalty area onto which Lissa Woodhouse and the Morecambe goal keeper came for with goal keeper just reaching it first.
20 min a cross from Darcie Greene on the left wing to the right side of the penalty area where Sophie Bell was deemed to have controlled it with her hand as it bounced up.
22 min Lissa Woodhouse was fouled in halfway which Rebecca Hornsey took but it was too strong travelling through to the goalkeeper.
25 min Kathryn Smith tried her luck hitting a shot from the edge of the area which the goal keeper caught
27 min Kathryn Smith played down the left wing into Sophie Bell whose cross into the goal area was palmed away by the Morecambe keeper just in front of Lissa Woodhouse.
28 min Amy Woodruff played a one two with Sophie Bell to beat 2 defenders, she crossed into Lissa Woodhouse but she was eased off it by the strength of the keeper in a fair challenge.
32 min Darcie Greene hit a shot just over the top of the left upright from the left edge of the penalty area
36 min Sophie Bell played one two with Drew Greene to break down the right wing, she crossed it to Darcie Greene in the penalty area but despite twisting and turning she could not fashion space for a shot so played back to Amy Woodruff who did shoot but over the crossbar.
38 min Morecambe free kick into the penalty area was headed out by Amy Woodruff and the subsequent shot was blocked by the out rushing Lucy Turner and Drew Greene.
43:24 Drew Greene sponsored by iVision dribbled through the Morecambe defence from the left side of the penalty area before calmly slotting her shot away inside the left hand post. Barnsley 1-0
46 min Half time whistle blew with Barnsley FC ladies on top but deserved to be more than one goal ahead.
Morecambe got the second half underway.
47 min Lissa Woodhouse pressed first the rear most defender and then the goal keeper to win a corner but it was cleared away.
51 min Sophie Crosby cleared up the left wing channel which Lissa Woodhouse chased down, she crossed into Drew Greene in the penalty area and she laid it back to Kathryn Smith who shot over the crossbar.
52 min good Barnsley build up play saw the ball at Amy Woodruff’s feet at the right edge of the penalty area but she shot over the crossbar
54:30 Amy Woodruff broke through into the right side of the penalty area where she was bumbled over, penalty awarded which Kathryn Smith stepped up to score in the right hand corner of the goal giving the keeper no chance 2-0 Barnsley.
56:30 Sophie Crosby took a Barnsley throw on halfway forward to Lissa Woodhouse who headed it in field to Kathryn Smith. She managed to thread a ball through the Morecambe defence into the right wing channel for Sophie Bell to run onto and cross square into Amy Woodruff sponsored by BB motorsport for a straight forward tap in goal 3-0 Barnsley.
60 min Rebecca Hornsey played Lissa Woodhouse through but her shot was saved out for a corner by the Morecambe keeper, Annie Ward headed over the cross bar
61 min changes for Barnsley with Drew Greene and Amy Woodruff substituted for Rebecca Fevers and for her debut Shannon Durkin.
63 min Morecambe No6 hit a long shot which Skye Kirkham easily palmed down.
64 min Morecambe sub with No 11 coming on.
65 min Barnsley corner taken by Sophie Crosby again headed goalwards by Annie Ward but the keeper caught it and released quickly up field, but Skye Kirkham was alert to come out of her area to clear away.
70 min Emily Ward comes on for Rebecca Hornsey. Slight formation change as both Emily Ward and Sophie Bell picked up more wing back positions
71 min Caution given to Morecambe No12 for unsporting behaviour by blocking off the run of Sophie Bell with no attempt to play the ball (SPA). Sophie Crosby hit the free kick up into the area where Annie Ward headed wide.
74 min Lissa Woodhouse took the ball up to the left side goal line before cutting inside and shooting from a tight angle straight across the goal area.
78 min Darcie Greene was tagged on the edge of the penalty area, Sophie Crosby took the free kick but it was blocked away.
79 min Lucy Turner caught the Morecambe No 9 about 22 yards out of goal but Skye Kirkham saved the free kick shot.
81 min Morecambe No 11 had been making a nuisance of herself since she came on and took a shot which she just pushed wide.
83 min foul on Sophie Crosby just inside the Barnsley half was hit up to Shannon Durkin on the right, she played in Lissa Woodhouse whose shot was caught by the goal keeper.
84 min Kathryn Smith spotted space on the left, switching play from the right wing into Emily Ward who played to the feet of Lissa Woodhouse who on the turn shaped for a shot only to have the ball nicked away.
85 min Morecambe cross from the left wing to the edge of the penalty area tempted Skye Kirkham out of her goal area, but she was beaten to it by No 11 who lobbed over into the open net 3-1.
92 min Morecambe No 6 took a shot which just missed the right hand post.
93 min Full Time.

Barnsley are now up to 9th but only 3 points behind 3rd with games in hand still. Next up is a trip to play Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies up on Teeside, they are one place below Barnsley FC Ladies 2 points behind. N&S were NERWFL champions last year and already have a couple of good wins in the FAWNL WLDWL, so will be a tricky game to navigate.
