Bekkie H17 May 2018 - 06:13

Hard played game in the Barnsley sun, but two goals in two minutes for Leeds United Ladies proved too hard to recover from, as Reds lose 1-2.

As local derbies go then there are not many bigger than Barnsley vs Leeds. Especially when seeing former captain Abby Parkin, striker Holly Findlay and U16 player Rebecca Jeffels in the blue strip of Leeds. But the supporters had come to Oakwell to sit in the stand and on the sunny banking to watch what turned out to be hard game of football where errors were plentiful, with flashes of skill and bravery from both sides in evidence.
A team amendment was required by Barnsley with Laura Wilson returning to help the team out due to the withdrawal of Bryony Hudson through illness Saturday.

Leeds Utd kicked off and were quickly on the attack with Rebecca Wilson blocking an attempted Leeds cross out for a corner, from which the high Leeds cross came to No19 at the back of the penalty area to shoot, but Kristie Ward blocked it away with her legs.
5 mins Leeds no 11 left winger seized onto a ball that bounced over the Barnsley defensive line but Rebecca Wilson was deemed to have obstructed her run for a free-kick, from which the Leeds No9 shot wide of right hand post from 25 yards.
9 min good pressure from Georgina Wilson on the Barnsley won a throw, from which the ball was slickly switched to Darcie Greene via Rebecca Fevers and Emily Ward. But her run forward was blocked as she tried to negotiate three Leeds covering defenders and only managing to get around one.
12 min Barnsley throw taken by Georgina Wilson into Drew Greene, under pressure she played back to Georgina Wilson who switched play via Rebecca Fevers wide left to Emily Ward, seeing a gap open up she drove to half way before trying to thread the ball to Kristie Ward but it was blocked off.
13 mins Leeds played a ball over the top but Lucy Turner slide across to win the ball on the edge of the penalty area.
15 mins Rebecca fevers played out wide left to Emily Ward, who played a channel ball for Darcie Greene to chase down and win a corner off Rebecca Jeffels. Anna Cairns hit a high in swinging corner which the keeper could only punch under pressure from both Kristie Ward and Rebecca Wilson. Drew Greene controlled the ball with back to goal set back to Emily Ward who hit from 30 yards out high and wide.
17 mins Kristie Ward conceded a free kick competing for the ball 15 yards inside the Leeds half. The free kick was delivered into their No 9 who controlled and then on the turn thread the ball into the left wing channel where it was picked up by their No 11 driving it into the penalty are tight to the goal line. She hit a cross come shot across the goal, which wrong footed Laura Wilson and as she tried to correct deflected the ball into the goal. 0-1 Leeds
19 mins the same combination of No9 and No11 linked up again down the Leeds left, this time hitting the ball over Georgina Wilson and then as the defence tried to recover the No11 turned inside and curled a shot deliciously into the top right corner of the goal leaving Laura Wilson no chance. 0-2 Leeds.
24 mins Leeds right back Rebecca Jeffels looped Holly Findlay to receive the ball and attempted a cross from the goal line which Rebecca Wilson blocked out for a corner. Laura Wilson bravely punched the corner away through a crowd of players.
26 mins Barnsley won a free kick in the Leeds half centrally just outside the centre circle when Darcie Greene was brought down. Anna Cairns unusually could not get it over the first line of defenders and Leeds cleared.
27 mins Georgina Wilson blocked away a Leeds attack down the left to concede another corner which Rebecca Wilson strongly headed clear.
37 min a Leeds ball over the top saw a foot race ensue between No 11 and Georgina Wilson, she didn’t dive in but was patience and just ran the No 11 off the ball turned and cleared.
39 min Drew Greene from the right wing hit a deep cross into Darcie Greene coming in off the left wing, she crossed into Kristie Ward, who controlled but was defended, unable to turn she played back to Elisha James, she dummied the shot and played wide right to Georgina Wilson who played it down the wing into Drew Greene who was fouled just before the penalty box line. Anna Cairns took the free kick but it was headed clear.
Half time 0-2 to Leeds and Barnsley had found it hard to break through their defence, whilst having to defend hard against threats through the middle and both wings.
Changes for Barnsley with Amy Woodruff coming on for Anna Cairns, with Amy playing left wing with Darcie Greene moving into midfield.
From the kick off Barnsley started brightly with Drew Greene driving down the right wing to the goal line before seeing her cross blocked away.
50 min Rebecca Wilson won the ball in her own half, taking it to halfway she then threaded the ball through the left wing channel for Amy Woodruff, who put Rebecca Jeffels on her bottom as she strongly progressed into the Leeds penalty area before playing into Kristie Ward to hit her shot just wide over the top right corner of the Leeds goal.
52 min another break down the right wing by Drew Greene was again defended away before she could get her cross away.
53 min a well-placed pass from Abby Parkin cut through the Leeds defence and with their left winger closing down on goal it took a very brave challenge from Lucy Turner to not just stop her but also playing the ball off her to win a goal kick.
54 mins Leeds Substitution.
54 min and as Darcie Greene burst forward through the middle of midfield she was cynically fouled by Leeds No 19 who received a caution for the challenge as Mike came on to treat Darcie.
55 mins Rebecca Fevers took the free-kick into a crowd of players on the edge of the goal area line which Amy Woodruff attacked rising above everyone to head over the flailing arms of the Leeds Goal keeper.

63 mins Barnsley Substitutions with Kristie Ward and Elisha James replaced by Alayna Millard and Isabel Thomas. This meant Amy Woodruff and Drew Greene up front with Alayna left wing and Isabel right wing.
65 mins Emily Ward and Alayna Millard linked up well down the left wing before releasing the ball up the wing into Amy Woodruff, she drove into the penalty area beating a defender before playing back to Drew Greene, her goal view was blocked so she played out right to Isabel Thomas who crossed deep to Alayna Millard who under pressure shot just wide.
70 mins Leeds cross into the Barnsley penalty area was blocked away by Lucy Turner into Darcie Greene, she broke forward through midfield before Leeds defender came across to clear out for a Barnsley throw.
71 mins Leeds substitution with No 11 replaced
72 mins Darcie Greene played a lovely ball over the top of the Leeds defence which Amy Woodruff competed with a defender in the penalty area, but was blown up for using her elbow, something she disagreed with and was spoken to by the referee in the presence of Barnsley Captain Lucy Turner.
74 mins final substitution for Leeds
80 mins a strong but fair tackle on Darcie Greene saw her hobble off for treatment, returning to the field 3 mins later.
84 mins Emily Ward defended to win the ball before playing into Drew Greene, she passed out to Isabel Thomas on the right who took it forward before winning a Barnsley throw,
85 mins Isabel Thomas broke forward down the right wing, she managed to get her cross into Darcie Greene who was tackled in the penalty area fairly, the ball fell to Drew Greene, she played out to Georgina Wilson to cross into the penalty area, Amy Woodruff attempted an overhead kick but missed the ball nut it fell to Alayna Millard who shot just wide.
91 mins as Barnsley applied pressure Isabel Thomas’s challenge to win the ball was deemed a foul, Amy Woodruff made some comment to receive a caution for dissent.
93 mins Full time and Leeds Utd celebrated wildly as this lifted them to 22 points secure in 3rd from bottom with one game left.
Amy Woodruff was named player of the match for Barnsley FC Ladies, coming on and scoring the goal she really made an impact 2nd half with her energy and work rate. Lucy Turner was the oppositions player of the match for her tenacious defending and organisation of defensive four.
