Barnsley FC Ladies vs Chorley Ladies FC

Bekkie H11 Sep 2017 - 07:46

1st WPL points earned at Oakwell in blustery conditions but no pot of gold

The teams were warmly received by the spectators as they were escorted onto the pitch by the Barnsley Ladies Juniors U13, Chorley Ladies in White/Black and Purple and Barnsley FC Ladies in Red and White.
Barnsley kicked off and enjoyed more possession than last week, passing the ball around. But Chorley were able to break up play especially when Barnsley tried to play the ball into the forward line. That was until the 9th min when Rebecca Fevers threaded a ball into Drew Greene in the right wing channel, she played a one- two with Demi Pringle before laying the ball back for Danielle Lowe to strike goal wards, caught easily by the Chorley Ladies goal keeper.
23 minutes Chorley Ladies won the ball in midfield, Kristie Ward went to make the tackle but it rebounded into the path of their No 10 who was straight through on goal at the edge of the penalty area, Lucy Turner spotted the danger and sprinting across made a superb covering tackle to win the ball.
29 mins Darcie Greene from left back played into the feet of Demi Pringle, she was tightly marked so played it square into Danielle Lowe, who again hit the ball goal wards and saved by the Chorley Keeper.
31 mins and this time Darcie Greene set up Rebecca Fevers who hit her shot over the cross bar.
34 mins Demi Pringle managed to find space to take a shot after good work by Holly Findlay down the left. Unfortunately the shot went over the cross bar.
0-0 half time
Similar tale to the 1st half with Barnsley enjoying time on the ball and Chorley disrupting their attacks before they could get into the penalty area to threaten to score.
65 min Drew Greene attacked down the right wing, playing the ball inside to Demi Pringle who set up Rebecca Fevers to shoot from 25 yards, but the Chorley goal keeper saved.
Substitutions with Amy Woodruff for Drew Greene on 66th mins. Anna Cairns for Kristie Ward 68th min, with Abby Parkin dropping to right back and Nikki Hogg for Danielle Lowe 73rd min.
Then in the 77 min Abby Parkin took a Barnsley throw into Anna Cairns to receive the ball back and cross into Amy Woodruff, she managed to hold off two defenders to get a weak shot away which was easily dealt with by the goalkeeper.
Then in the 90th min Rebecca Fevers found herself with a bit of space, driving forward, spectators holding their breath, she hit a strong shot from 25 yards which stung the goal keepers hands as she dived to divert it away for a corner. Abby Parkin took the corner but it was headed clear.
Full-time 0-0, it may seem to some to have been one of those afternoons, with plenty of Barnsley possession but no end result, however on the WPL journey the team are on it shows that they are able to compete. 1st points gained and lifted off the bottom of the league, the team should take a dose of confidence and belief. Barnsley played some good football, but the Chorley midfield and defence were well drilled and experienced to withstand the pressure to get the result.
Barnsley Player of the Match was Rebecca Fevers with opposition player of the match Demi Pringle.
Thank you to all who came to watch. Come on You Reds!!
