The Reds start the season with a win at the OLP.

The Reds kicked off their FA Women’s National League (FAWNL) campaign on Sunday as they hosted Worcester City Women at the OLP.

Both teams started the game scrappily but it was the visitors who had the games first half chances including a brilliantly blocked shot by Eve Marshall.

The visitors then had some well worked play that resulted in a save tipped over the bar by skipper Bean Clarke.

After a scrappy and nervy first 20 minutes, the Reds took the lead in the 22nd minute, after a great ball over the top by debutant Summer Reece down the left channel found fellow debutant Amber Sewell.

The left winger ran into the box and pulled the ball back for the Tanya Fozzard to score her first league goal in her first game, blasting home from close range.

The Reds were in their groove and had it not been for visiting keeper Jodie Whiteman’s save and a guilt- edge shot going over the bar, we could and should have been further ahead.

At this point it felt like a matter of time before we go our second, and, just before the half-hour mark, we made it 2-0.

After some great pressing by Lucy Cook and Ocean Rolandsen (both also making their league debuts for the Reds) the ball was played expertly by Rolandsen to Amber Sewell and the first time shot rifled into the bottom right-hand corner.

The visitors had an attempt just before the half-time whistle but it sailed over.

Half Time. The Reds 2-0 Worcester City.

In truth the first 15/20 minutes were nervy but once the first went in, it was a joy to watch some of the play come together considering the number of league debutants.

As we began the second half, Worcester immediately went close after a Highway corner was met by the head of Carys Lowley, but it cannoned off the woodwork.

In the 50th minute, the visitors striker Evie Billingsley was played in, but her effort was comfortably saved by skipper Bean Clarke.

After this we had a couple of efforts, one from Abi Housecroft which if not for a block was destined for the net and one from Maisie Norde who blazed the shot wide.

In the 80th minute, The Reds were clean through on goal after some great play and running from Amber Sewell, a constant threat all day. However, the shot went wide of the post.

A minute later, the visitors had a lifeline after substitute Jess Bate hit a thunderbolt into the top corner. In all fairness, it was some strike.

We were in again shortly after the restart through Olivia Richardson but denied by an offside flag (which the dugout definitely disagreed with)

In the 86th minute, visitor keeper Whiteman made another great save to keep the Reds at bay.

As injury time started, the Reds scored their third, with Helen Lynskey making no mistake one-on-one.

Hard earned win and could and should have been more.

Thank you to all the fans for attending and making it such a great day.

We wish Worcester City all the best until we meet again.

FSOA POTM: Amber Sewell

Unit’s verdict- Always good to get a win in the first game. Nervy start but once settled started to play some good stuff. Was great to see the resilience of the group. They know they can reach higher gears. Onwards and Upwards.

Next up, we travel to the Home of Football Stadium in the League Cup to take on Sheffield United U21s on Thursday, 21st August, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm. We then have a quick turnaround before we face Boldmere St Michaels in our first away day in the league on Sunday.
