On Sunday 7th we hosted Newcastle United Women Football Club for the final match of the season, and what a crowd this produced!
Kick off was at 14:00 and from the start both teams are in it to win it. With a great save from Clarke and brilliant defensive play from all we are able to keep Newcastle strikers from converting any play into goals...
With a series of corners ensuing followed by some more defensive plays, Pierrpont at 22 minutes drives through to a 1-1 with the Newcastle Goal Keeper! Unfortunately the keeper smothers it but this is the first big chance for either team in the game!!!!
Newcastle keep the pressure on but are yet to create any clear cut opportunities, but at 32"this all changes with Clarke having to make an outrageous save, leaving the crowd noisy and tense.
Not long after Pierrpoint and Snelson create a brilliant play with Snelson heading the ball just wide...just missing the finish.
At 37 minutes Newcastle take the lead. 1-0.
Both teams seem fatigued as half time rolls in, with a bit of ping pong play in the middle of the pitch. 1-0 Newcastle at HT.
For the final half of the season both sides are back on the pitch, with the game equally still attainable. Barnsley come out strong with two searching balls, this is responded to by Newcastle with some strong attempts on goal, yet both teams aren't able to make it count.
The majority of the second half is battled through with each team creating breaks and then having to defend, with no change of the score.
At 85 mins Newcastle score again, creating a 2-0 lead. The crowd erupts with 'Toon, Toon, Toon' as the their Women increase their lead.
At 95 minutes and the end of the game, Newcastle United Women win the league title. Congrats NUWFC.
