First Home Win of Season as Reds defeat Whites in front of amazing crowd support

With excellent local support Barnsley looked to carry their positive form into game week 2 from the first whistle, winning their individual duels across the park, and looking to pose a constant threat to the Leeds back line and goalkeeper.

In the 6th minute, Eve Marshall fired a long diagonal ball from her right central defence role beyond the left side of Leeds defence for Pierrepont to attack, the left sided forward used the ball’s bounce to her advantage as she struck it on the half volley over the head of
Leeds’ on rushing goalkeeper and into an empty net.
Within the space of 5 minutes Barnsley added a second goal to their tally. Nat Shaw’s work-rate and desire helped turn a seemingly dead opportunity into an open goal for Csomor to head home courtesy of a lofted cross from the left edge of the box.
The Reds’ priority became retaining their clean sheet; however the home side were still successful in posing a threat to the Leeds goal on occasions in open play, and had huge success with their set pieces despite failing to find the back of the net.
As the half time whistle blew, Leeds had begun to gain an element of control back on the game. However, from the moment that play resumed in the second half, Barnsley were back on the front foot, winning their respective duels and proactive to second balls, despite
momentum killing pauses in play due to couple of frustrated late challenges from the travelling side.
Around the hour mark Ashton was brought off to make way for Ruby Jex-Oldfield after a great performance anchoring and providing cover to her back line, and her replacement, Ruby brought much of the same with great energy to cover each blade of grass in the
middle of the park.
Shaw was hard working and aggressive when leading Barnsley’s line, not allowing a moments peace for the opposition defenders, as manager Lois Daniels heralded her after the game, “She is the ultimate team player” and when reflecting on her complete performance, the gaffer added “A job she should be really proud of”.
As the 90 minutes approached, Leeds saw a golden opportunity denied by the hands of Clarke after Leeds’ forward cut inside onto her favoured left boot, creating space for the shot in the process, Clarke’s cat-like reflexes secured her clean sheet, and 3 points for her
side which sees Barnsley placed at the top of the division.

Player of the Match was Nat Shaw
