A crisp afternoon in South Manchester with the two sides meeting in the FA Cup third round qualifying stages. Barnsley came in as overwhelming favourites being top of the Northern National League.
And the favourites lived up to early expectation when Jodie Nelson put the away team one-nil up in the open two minutes from the opening corner of the match.
Following that Wythenshawe grabbed a grip on the game and had most of the chances in the first fifteen minutes, however couldn't make anything of them.
It was then Barnsley who made the net move when Nat Watson thundered a shot in from thirty yards out, after some good play between Millard and Woodcock. Watsons goal put Barnsley two-nil ahead after just twenty five minutes.
But it only took Wythenshawe two minutes to cut Barnsley lead in half when Libby Dixon smartly chipped Serena Clark, a brilliant bit of play from the Wythenshawe forward.
Wythenshawe continued to find joy using the long ball over the top of Barnsley high line and Libby Dixon was at it again when she doubled her goal tally for the afternoon in the thirty fifth minute. The game was now level which was what Wythenshawe had deserved for their start.
The sides went in level at the break, however Barnsley would've felt slightly lucky to still be drawing given the pattern of the game.
It only took Lois five minutes after half time to look to her bench, where she introduced Biggins and Shaw at the expense of Csomor and Pierrepont. Changes that would prove to be beneficial to Barnsley.
Only minutes after being bought on Nat Shaw pounced on a ball on the edge of the box and finished unbelievably well into the top left hand corner to give Barnsley the lead again.
Moments later and the it felt as though the wheels had fallen off for Wythenshawe when one of there defenders received her second yellow card of the game for needlessly kicking the ball away after giving away a foul in Barnsley half. Wythenshawe now down to ten.
The next twenty minutes were Barnsleys, creating multiple chances for newly introduced Biggins and Shaw however they still only held a one goal lead with ten minutes remaining.
Wythenshawe through everything they had at Barnsley, however The Reds were able to hold on and progress to the next round, with the draw taking place on Monday 23rd October.
