With Storm Freya threatening this friendly game was going to be an interesting tussle, especially as some of the current Reds squad had previous played for SUWFC.
Sheffield got the game underway playing in their away strip of luminous green, not missing their players today.
Not surprising a lot of the first half saw Barnsley defending as Sheffield switched the ball and attacked down both flanks, but the defence held well with Carrie Simpson making a great reaction save on 16 min. Lucy Turner came close from a Sophie Crosby corner with her header grazing the top of the crossbar. It wasn't until the 28th min when they attacked down the right, passed Sophie Crosby with a nice one two pulling Annie Ward across to slip the ball inside to No4 who attacked the goal and shot past Carrie Simpson. 0-1 Sheffield.
Then UEFA B Barnsley Manager Chris Hamilton made a tweak to the game plan putting Shannon Durkin into a No10 position behind Lissa Woodhouse and she worked well between the lines, pressing and linking play, but Barnsley could not find the break through. Sheffield should have score again with a cross from the left which fizzed across the six yard into the feet of the striker who got a touch to it but somehow it missed the target going over the crossbar from 3 yards out.
2nd half underway and Danielle Whitham was disrupting play up in the midfield alongside of Rebecca Hornsey, with the Drew & Darcie Greene lively up the wings.
Then on 53 min Sophie Bell hit a clearance ball up the right wing towards Drew Greene inside the Sheffield half, their No 23 under pressure from Drew played a back pass towards their Keeper on the edge of the penalty area, it was a little short and Lissa Woodhouse had gambled to put pressure on the keeper tracked by her marker, the clearance ball hit Lissa and rebounded into the centre of the field where she raced onto it and calmly rolled the ball left footed into the open goal 1-1.
54 min Sheffield substitute No 10 off No15 on.
55 min and a mis judged comment directed at the Referee saw the straight dismissal of a Sheffield player No3, but as this was a friendly Barnsley Manager was ok with No10 coming back on
59 min a Sheffield clearance is picked up by Drew Greene sponsered by iVision, she hit an audacious volley shot (or was it a cross) from the right of the penalty area that looped over the Keeper and into the far corner of the goal 2-1 to Barnsley.
64 min Barnsley substitution with Hannah Campbell making her debut for Shannon Durkin, Kathryn Smith coming on for Lissa Woodhouse.
74 min Darcie Greene made way for Mollie Crump
78 min Carrie Simpson was substituted for Skye Kirkham and Amy Woodruff came on for Drew Greene
Understandably as the clocked ticked by Sheffield Utd raised the tempo and Barnsley defended resolutely.
88 min Sheffield Utd No 4 who had been busy all over the pitch managed to thread through No9 in the centre of the penalty area but Skye Kirkham was alert and closed down to save with her right leg and between Annie Ward and Lucy Turner they cleared the danger.
92 min Full time whistle and Barnsley were over joyed, another great team effort.
Cawa Coffee player of the game was Danielle Whitham.
Back to league action next week with an away game vs Chorley
C'mon you Reds!!!!
