Cup disappointment in a match that delivered everything but the win through to the next round

2nd Qualifying round of this year’s SSE Women’s FA Cup was played at Dorothy Hyman 4G Stadium, saw Barnsley FC Ladies drawn against same league competition with a 4-1-4-1 line-up formation, both Annie Ward and Rebecca Hornsey were on holiday so in came Emily Ward and Amy Woodruff to the starting line-up and Caitlin Ross-Robinson and Isabel Thomas onto the substitutes bench.
Lucy Turner won the toss and Newcastle Utd Women kicked off.

2nd min Amy Woodruff played out of midfield into Lissa Woodhouse, she passed out to the right wing where Kathryn Smith had pulled free, she crossed but it went into the side netting.
3rd min Rebecca Fevers hit a precise ball through the Newcastle defence which Lissa Woodhouse chased down into the penalty area to shoot, but it took a deflection out for a corner.
4 min Amy Woodruff broke down the right wing and crossed deep out to Darcie Greene to win a corner.
5 min Kathryn Smith won the ball back in midfield to pass into the right wing channel where Lissa Woodhouse reached it before the Newcastle keeper who had rushed out, Lissa took the ball round the keeper but was defended out wide so played back to Amy Woodruff who shot straight at the keeper who had recovered her position.
6 min 30 sec Sophie Bell headed the ball twice in the right back position before playing out to Amy Woodruff on the right wing, she hit a long ball over the Newcastle defenders, Lissa Woodhouse picked the ball and calmly lobbed it over the Newcastle Keeper who had rushed out. 1-0 Barnsley
9 min Newcastle attacked up their right wing, although defended they managed to hit a shot just wide of the right hand post
14 min a good Barnsley press in the right corner won the ball back and Darcie Greene squared into Rebecca Fevers who hit her shot goal wards where it was caught by the Newcastle keeper.
15 min Lucy Turner from the back played a long ball through to Amy Woodruff who was one on one with the Newcastle keeper, she attempted the lob but slightly over hit and it went passed the top right crossbar.
18.20 a quick break by Newcastle from left to right wing broke through the Barnsley defence beating the offside and one on one with Skye Kirkham they lobbed over her to equalise, 1-1
21 min Lucy Turner hit another long ball releasing Lissa Woodhouse, she crossed into Drew Greene who squared to Sister Darcie Greene but her shot was blocked away.
32 min free kick to Barnsley when Amy Woodruff was fouled just inside the Newcastle half, was swung in by Sophie Crosby to the back post where Drew Greene headed back in towards Amy Woodruff but the offside flag was raised.
39 min a cross from the right wing by Amy Woodruff was flicked on by Lissa Woodhouse into Drew Greene who turned and shot which the goalkeeper despite seeing late managed to save.
40 min following a high press bay Barnsley which saw them win the ball back Amy Woodruff found herself with a moment of space to hit a rifle shot into the top left 2-1
Half time and the Reds had made most of the attacking chances to lead 2-1


Barnsley got the 2nd half underway
47 min Kathryn Smith played into Lissa Woodhouse to shoot on the turn which the Newcastle keeper saved bottom left corner.
50 min 10s a simple thru ball by Newcastle saw Skye Kirkham lobbed despite pressure by Lucy Turner, 1-1
52 min Newcastle 11 picked the ball up on halfway and attacked down the right wing turning away from Emily Ward, but she recovered to block the cross out for a corner.
53 min Newcastle attacked the Barnsley penalty area but despite a goalmouth scramble were unable to find the back of the goal as Sophie Crosby cleared.
54 min Drew Greene passed to Kathryn Smith who found Amy Woodruff on the right wing, squaring the ball inside to Darcie Greene to pass into Kathryn Smith to shoot but the Newcastle keeper saved on the line.
56 min Newcastle free kick was swung into the penalty area where it was headed unchallenged goal ward but the flag was raised
57 min Newcastle broke through into the penalty area, Skye Kirkham was quickly out but the ball was shot underneath her as she tried to get down to block it, fortunately Sophie Crosby had covered back to clear it off the goal line.
62 min Newcastle played a short corner and shot, but Skye Kirkham was able to tip it over the cross bar for another corner. This time Newcastle had a free header which Skye managed to save out wide. From the 3rd corner the ball was headed over but Skye had it covered.
67 min a Barnsley free kick 23 yards out was taken by Sophie Crosby and saved over the crossbar, from the corner Lucy turner headed just wide.
71 min Newcastle No7 ran onto a through ball into the penalty area but Skye Kirkham was out quickly to smother the chance getting caught in the head with a boot in the process.
72.37 Rebecca Fevers is substituted for Mollie Crump, with a change around of positions with Sophie Bell moving to right wing, Mollie to right back with Amy Woodruff moving more central and Kathryn Smith picking un the holding midfield role that Rebecca have played.
77 min Newcastle Substitution
79 min Mollie Crump attacked up the right wing before playing forward for Lissa Woodhouse to chase but it went out for a goal kick.
83 min Newcastle switched the play from left wing to right wing to put their No11 through but she was flagged just offside.
85 min Drew Greene and Darcie Greene linked up well down the left wing before switching play to Sophie Bell on the right wing via Kathryn Smith in the centre mid, she tried to cross in but it was blocked away only as far as Mollie Crump who attacked into the penalty area before being tackled.
87 min Newcastle shot but it went just wide of the Barnsley right hand post.
88 min Lissa Woodhouse received the ball played forward by Emily Ward down the left wing channel, she pulled back to Darcie Greene who found herself surrounded managing to get the ball to Amy Woodruff whose shot was blocked into Kathryn Smith who shot just wide.
89 min a handball appeal by Newcastle against Lucy Turner in the Barnsley penalty area was waved away
91 min Lucy Turner hit a long ball up from the back into the right wing channel where Lissa Woodhouse chased it down to win a corner. Sophie Crosby swung in into the goal area but it was headed clear, Sophie Bell retrieved and crossed back in just over the head of Amy Woodruff but Lissa Woodhouse shot goal wards only to see it blocked away for another corner. This time the goal keeper managed to punch clear and the whistle went for the end of the 2nd half.
Stalemate nothing to split these 2 teams and with it being a cup game it had to be finished today so into Extra time.
Barnsley FC Ladies got the first period underway but it was Newcastle who were quickly on the attack winning a corner in the 93rd min which Skye Kirkham saved,
94 min Sophie Bell switch play from right wing to Darcie Greene on the left she drove forward before crossing in to the penalty area but too close to the keeper.
99 min Amy Woodruff hit a chance just wide
100 min Newcastle broke free down their left wing, crossing into the box but under pressure Emily Ward cleared
101 min Newcastle No11 broke through one on one with Skye Kirkham who bravely dove at her feet to gather the ball, receiving another knock in the process and a free-kick.
102 min Emily Ward won the ball back in her penalty area before releasing out to Darcie Greene, she played forward to Lissa Woodhouse whose fitness meant she was still chasing down balls, she crossed into the area but it was cleared away.
105 min Sophie Crosby swung in a Barnsley corner which Kathryn Smith hit wide.
106 min Newcastle attacked down the left crossing in to the box the shot missed the target
107 min Drew Greene down the left wing saw her initial cross blocked, before crossing again into Lissa Woodhouse to just head into the hands of the grateful keeper.
108 min a Barnsley cross from the right wing was blocked away into Amy Woodruff, she played in Darcie Greene but her shot was straight at the keeper
108 min 30s changes for Barnsley with Emily Ward replaced by Isabel Thomas with Mollie Crump switching to left back, Sophie Bell going to right back and Isabel taking up right wing position.
109 min Sophie Bell picked out Kathryn Smith in centre midfield, she played out to Isabel Thomas on the right wing who took on her defender right to the goal line to win a corner, which the keeper punched away.
112 min Isabel Thomas and Sophie Bell looped each other up the right wing to cross deep into the penalty area where Kathryn Smith won a throw and then a corner from which Mollie Crump rose high to head just wide
114 min Sophie Bell played through to Drew Greene, she attacked to the edge of the penalty area to have he shot block away into Mollie Crum on half way, she drove forward and shot just wide.
115 min Newcastle substitution
116 min Newcastle broke down the left before shooting which Skye Kirkham managed to tip onto the post.
117 min Newcastle free kick from the right wing was pushed clear by Skye Kirkham
119 min Newcastle broke forward and were awarded a free-kick on the edge of Barnsley penalty area, No19 hit it well over the Barnsley wall which Skye Kirkham got her hand to but was unable to keep out of the goal. 2-3 Newcastle.
120 min Barnsley pressed forward for an equaliser but were unable to find one. Whistle blown for full time
The game had many twists and turns played in a true cup match style, end to end through variable weather conditions. Player of the match for Barnsley was Sophie Crosby.
Disappointing for Barnsley FC ladies to loose and made harder in the fact that it was last minute. But with 2 league games to come perhaps chance for revenge next time against Newcastle.
Best wishes to Newcastle Utd Women in the next round but it is back to the league next at Oakwell vs Burnley Ladies another stern test.
