Barnsley FC Ladies vs Bolton Wanderers Ladies FC FAWNL League Cup

Bekkie H3 Sep 2018 - 14:29

League Cup disappointment after a bright start as the Trotters put in a strong 2nd half performance

Bolton Wanderers Ladies FC won the toss so Barnsley FC Ladies got this FAWNL Cup fixture underway.

1 min Barnsley FC Ladies switched the ball from left to right wing where Drew Greene played in Lissa Woodhouse in the right channel, she hit a low shot across the front of the goal keeper into the far left corner of the net. 1-0 Barnsley
3 min Bolton attack down the left, driving strongly into the penalty area with Sophie Bell trying to get on terms, but playing the ball from the goal line into the centre of the goal area they equalised. 1-1 level terms.
6 min Drew Greene won the ball on half way, playing the ball forward into the right wing channel run of Lissa Woodhouse to shoot 1st time only to see it blocked away for a corner by a Bolton defender lunge. Sophie Crosby hit the corner into the side netting.
8 min Rebecca Hornsey swung in a Barnsley corner from the left which Lucy Turner managed to head goal wards but into the hands of the goalkeeper.
12 min Lissa Woodhouse received the ball to feet with her back to goal, she turned her defender smartly before driving towards the goal line from where she crossed to the back post where Darcie Greene played it back to Amy Woodruff to shoot, again blocked away for a corner. Sophie Crosby took the corner which saw Bolton scramble it away for another corner this time from the left which Rebecca Hornsey took and Amy Woodruffe rose highest to head into the goal. 2-1 Barnsley 15 min gone.
18 min Darcie Greene linked up with Amy Woodruff down the left wing she crossed and the Bolton defender miss kicked her clearance up into the air with a wicked back spin which took it away from the goal keeper when it bounced, Rebecca Hornsey took a shot which was bravely blocked away into midfield, but up rushed Kathryn Smith to smash it low and hard from 30 yards out into the bottom right hand corner of the net. 3-1 Barnsley.
28 min with it being a hot day the Referee allowed a short drinks break.
29 min Bolton broke forward but Lucy Turner managed to get a slide tackle in to win the ball back, Rebecca Hornsey picked up and played forward to Drew Greene who saw her 1st cross blocked but retrieved to play back to Kathryn Smith whose shot was caught by the goalkeeper.
33 min the Bolton number 11 was tackled heavily by Drew Greene as she tried to make progress up the left wing, but Annie Ward safely cleared the ball into the box from the resulting free kick.
41 min a left wing to right wing cross field switch was picked up by Drew Greene, she played inside to Kathryn Smith and she raced into the right wing channel drawing her defender with her before crossing into the goal area where Lissa Woodhouse rose to head just over the crossbar.
46 min a Sophie Crosby corner was hit deep passed the far post which Annie Ward managed to backpedal to head just wide.
Half-time 3-1 Barnsley FC Ladies, some good football played by both sides and it was clear this cup game was not over.
48 min Barnsley start brightly with a swift attack down the right with Drew Greene crossing in defended out for a corner from which Bolton cleared.
49 min Bolton attacked down their left wing crossing into the penalty area from which Kathryn Smith smashed a clearance over the cross bar in front of the Bolton number 8.
50 min Rebecca Hornsey took a nasty high kick to the side of her face, with the Bolton No2 receiving a yellow card which indicated that the Referee deemed no deliberate intent in the challenge. Thankfully after a couple of minute’s treatment Rebecca was back on her feet.
53 min Kathryn Smith struck a low shot towards the Bolton goal which was palmed away from the bottom left corner by the Bolton keeper. From the corner Lucy Turner flicked onto Amy Woodruff who headed just over the crossbar.
56 min Bolton make their only substitution
61 min Bolton attacked down their right wing playing in their No 9 who despite pressure from Annie Ward managed to hit low across the front of Skye Kirkham inside the far post bottom left corner. 3-2

70 min Amy Woodruff was replaced by Mollie Crump with Darcie Greene moving from centre midfield to the left wing.
79 min Bolton attacked down the right wing which Sophie Crosby managed to break down with a tackle inside the penalty area which left her injured, play continued up to half way. Then Bolton came again with their No 9 taking the ball into the penalty area towards Sophie and getting her shot away which Skye Kirkham saved just inside her right hand post. There followed a sharp blow of the whistle as much to the surprise of many the Referee awarded a penalty to Bolton, he must have seen some interference or something for him to consider a shot on goal was not a clear advantage. From the penalty although Skye Kirkham went the right way it was hit low and hard under her dive. 3-3.
82 min Sophie Crosby still struggling was subbed with Emily Ward.
85 min Bolton No 8 threaded a ball through the Barnsley defensive line on the edge of the centre circle, their No 9 raced onto it just played onside by Sophie Bell. Lucy Turner sprinted back and just on the edge of the penalty D managed to stretch out her foot to knock the ball away but brought down the No9 as well. The ball went into the path of another Bolton player, Whistle blown and ball slotted into the goal. There was no hesitation by the Referee to brandish the red card at Lucy Turner for what could only have been DOGSO (denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity) which was strange considering the goal had been scored albeit after the whistle had blown. Bolton Management were incensed for the lack of advantage and Barnsley Management bewildered as they thought Lucy had touched the ball away and with the Barnsley goal keeper still to beat had it been an obvious goal scoring opportunity? A credit to Lucy though as she just accepted the decision handed over the armband to Annie Ward and left the field of play. Barnsley reshuffled with Sophie Bell moving to centre back, Mollie Crump to right back.
88 min Barnsley free kick from the left wing was hit by Rebecca Hornsey just over the top right corner of the goal drawing a groan from the Reds supporters.
89 min Mollie Crump is strong in defence shielding the ball out under pressure from Bolton left winger as they push forward for a winner.
90 min Bolton win a free kick on the left wing which is swung into the central penalty area, Sophie Bell rose well to head but unfortunately it flew into the top right corner of the goal instead of the intended direction away from goal. 3-4 Bolton Wanderers

95 min Barnsley continued press for the equaliser despite playing with ten players for the last 10 minutes. Another free kick from Rebecca Hornsey swung in from the left was met by a Barnsley head in the penalty area, this time it was Annie Ward who found Mollie Crump to cross back in and Darcie Greene stretched up to get her head to it but it went over the Bolton crossbar.
96 min whistle blown for full time. Both Bolton Wanderers & Barnsley players sank to the astro turf having put in exhausting effort, both teams playing their part in a cup game that had plenty of action and incident for supporters & management to mull over and reflect on ahead of playing each other again in the league on the same pitch.
Player of the match for Barnsley was Rebecca Hornsey with Emma Pilling named Bolton’s opposition player.
