Fantastic support for the Team in the Keepmoat stadium to watch this final, the 3rd year running against Huddersfield Town Ladies. This year the cup went back to Huddersfield in a hard contested 0-3 defeat for Barnsley. But considering league positions Barnsley FC Ladies nullified Huddersfield for large portions of the game and even managed a couple of chances of their own. A proud Barnsley performance.
From meeting in the car park in front of Oakwell south stand, travelling to the ground courtesy of Yorkshire Rose , to walking through the tunnel at the Keepmoat stadium
, the team carried an air of optimistic underdog into the SHFA County cup final sponsored by SGP Graves & Thorncliffe.
Following the walk out with junior mascots,
both teams lined up in their home colours in front of a crowd of about 250 for the handshake, before retreating to team huddles and the captains toss which Huddersfield Town ladies won giving Barnsley the kick off.
1 min it was Huddersfield who mounted the first attack with Georgina Wilson forcing ex Barnsley player Britt Sanderson into the left hand corner, but she managed to bounce the ball of Georgina and get her cross away, but it was headed tamely past the right hand upright.
3 min Rebecca Fevers won the ball in midfield and found Darcie Greene, she slid the ball through the Huddersfield defensive line for Isabel Thomas to attempt to chip over the out rushing Huddersfield keeper who managed to get a palm to it taking off some of the speed and allowing the defender to reach and clear before it crossed the goal line. The scramble that ensued finished with Darcie Greene hitting the ball over the cross bar from seven yards, so close and it gave Barnsley some belief.
6 min Bryony Hudson hit a long goal kick which Drew Greene headed on to Amy Woodruff charging into the right hand side of the penalty area before putting in a low cross which was just in front of the despairing slide of Isabel Thomas and into the grateful hands of the Huddersfield keeper.
7 min Emily Ward broke up the left wing, finding her path blocked by the defensive unit, she played back to Rebecca Wilson who hit a deep cross into Amy Woodruff, but she was unable to get power into the header which went straight to the keeper.
9 min a rare mistake when Lucy Turner tried playing out from the back saw her lose the ball and Huddersfield shot over the cross bar from 25 yard
11 min Huddersfield attacked through the centre before threading a ball into penalty area, cries of offside were waved away with Georgina Wilson playing her on as she hit a low shot which Bryony Hudson saved with her legs.
16 min Rebecca Wilson passed back to Bryony Hudson, when Huddersfield forward Katie Nutter speculative pressure was rewarded by winning the ball as Bryony tried to dribble round her leaving her to tap into the open net as Bryony scrambled to recover. 0-1 Huddersfield Town.
20 min Georgina Wilson played right wing channel ball for Drew Greene to chase down and cross into Isabel Thomas awarded a free kick 20 yards out. Elisha James struck a lovely kick around the wall which left the keeper scrambling across to palm away for a corner passed her right hand post.
25 min pass back into Bryony Hudson and this time she tried a first time clearance only to see it rebound off the Huddersfield Town forward and into the path of Sarah Danby who slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal 0-2 Huddersfield and Bryony looked crest fallen but comforted by team mates and encouraged from the Barnsley supporters.
30 min Barnsley pressure on a Huddersfield throw was rewarded by when Drew Greene won the ball before making progress forward to win a Barnsley throw deep in the Huddersfield half from which Barnsley were awarded a free kick. Elisha James swung in the cross but this was strongly headed clear.
31 min Huddersfield break two on two, but Rebecca Wilson stuck to her task pressuring the ball and when the striker turned inside and shot Bryony Hudson gathered safely.
32 min Huddersfield No 9 broke down the left wing, crossing into the penalty are the header was over the crossbar.
33 min this time Huddersfield broke down the right wing, the cross was headed clear by Lucy turner but only as far as a midfielder on the edge of the penalty box who hit her shot over the cross bar.
34 min Barnsley throw taken by Georgina Wilson into Darcie Greene was met with a squeal of pain as ex Barnsley player Charley Evans came in with a slightly late foot up challenge which caught Darcie just above her right ankle. There followed 9 mins treatment on the pitch by St Johns Ambulance during which both teams reflected on their performances so far before Darcie was substituted for Anna Cairns on 43 min.
47 min Rebecca Fevers switch play to find Amy Woodruff on the left, she turned her defender inside before finding a pass to Isabel Thomas, her shot was blocked and the rebound fell to Anna Cairns but her shot was also blocked away.
49 min Barnsley back pass to Bryony Hudson, pressured by Charley Evans, was under hit out to Lucy Turner resulting in a low shot from Charley which Bryony Hudson saved with her feet.
53 min half time, with Ian Clarke and Mike Eracleous needing to give a stirring half time talk to pick up the Reds to regroup and decide how to use their two remaining substitutes, with earlier round cup tied junior players not available to support.
Floodlights greeted the teams at the start of the second half as Huddersfield restarted the game. Good to see Darcie Greene hobble out to sit on the bench with a very swollen bruised ankle, which was later checked out to find no break.
Huddersfield broke down the right wing, Drew Greene headed the cross clear, but it fell to Huddersfield player Lucy Sowerby whose shot rebounded off the cross bar which Lucy Turner was alert to clear, but it was crossed back in and Kate Mallin slotted into the goal only to be disallowed for Offside.
Emily Ward headed a Huddersfield goal kick into Drew Greene she broke forward to win a Barnsley throw.
Elisha James won the ball back in midfield which Rebecca Fevers placed over the Huddersfield defence and into the path of Amy Woodruff who raced into the penalty area only to win a corner off a lovely covering tackle.
Kate Mallin down the right wing dummied a through ball which wrong footed Emily Ward before crossing into the penalty area but Bryony Hudson kicked clear
55 min changes for Barnsley with Rebecca Fevers coming off and Kristie Ward on up front, with Amy Woodruff dropping into midfield.
57 min Amy Battel off Danielle Whittham on for Huddersfield.
59 min Emily Ward played into Kristie Ward, she held the ball up before playing back to Emily Ward to hit a left foot pass into the industrious Isabel Thomas, but she was tackled and the attack snubbed out.
62 min Emily Ward anticipated a through pass into Kate Mallin, finding Kristie Ward available but she was defended well so could only play back to Emily Ward to try and find Amy Woodruff, but the pass was intercepted before the attack could build.
64 min Bryony Hudson took a Barnsley free kick just outside the centre circle up to Kristie Ward, on the turn she threaded through to Isabel Thomas who was fouled. Anna Cairns swung in the cross which Kristie Ward headed goal wards which the keeper could only get one hand to knocking it towards her left hand post, but she recovered quickly to dive on it before it cross the line under pressure from Rebecca Wilson.
66 min Drew Greene played through the Huddersfield defence finding Isabel Thomas but the Huddersfield keeper was alert and quickly out to clear and start a break at the other end which Lucy Turner had to head wide for a corner
69 min Huddersfield attacked down the right wing into the penalty area a short pull back was anticipated by Georgina Wilson who managed to get a half block on the shot and Bryony Hudson bravely smothered the ball at the feet of the Huddersfield striker.
71 min Sarah Danby off and Sarah Dobby on for Huddersfield
73 min Amy Woodruff found a pass to Kristie Ward who looped a high ball over for Isabel Thomas to chase down but the keeper gathered.
74 min Huddersfield cross from the left wing was met by a Huddersfield head and tipped over the cross bar by Bryony Hudson, then from the corner Lucy Turner headed to Emily Ward to clear the danger.
81 min Rebecca Wilson from defence saw a path open up in front of her so she drove forward through midfield before finding Amy Woodruff who crossed low into Kristie Ward, her shot under pressure rattle back off the cross bar to groans from the Barnsley support, time was ebbing away.
82 min Emily Ward won the ball back in midfield, passing into Rebecca Wilson wide right she found Isabel Thomas who had not stopped running all game, but now with legs tiring her attack was defended clear.
83 final change for Huddersfield with Katie Nutter replaced by Vicky Abbott.
84 min as Barnsley tried to press forward Huddersfield broke down their left wing and crossed into the box to be headed unchallenged into the bottom right corner by Lucy Sowerby, 0-3 Huddersfield.
90 min a Huddersfield corner from yet another blocked cross by Georgina Wilson was headed clear by Elisha James setting up a Barnsley attack which saw Kristie Ward have a through ball blocked that Anna Cairns retrieved to release Isabel Thomas on one final charge forward, she managed to play back to Amy Woodruff who under pressure hit her shot wide and out for a goal kick.
Final Score 0-3 to Huddersfield Town Ladies in a game where Barnsley FC Ladies can hold their heads high at having worked industriously to thwart a potent Huddersfield attack for long period, but in the end a couple of errors and a higher level of football shone through.

signing autographs in the programmes of the Barnsley Juniors as Huddersfield Town ladies celebrated their win.
