Quarter final of the SGP Graves & Thorncliffe County cup and a match against Millmoor Junior Ladies FC that was played on the 4G Oakwell pitch on a cold afternoon, no match for the Development side meaning they were able to support following their training session.
Barnsley kicked off and meant business from the start, with Darcie Greene on left wing picking out Brittany Sanderson in midfield, she passed to Kathryn Smith who threaded a return ball to Darcie Greene to shoot which the Keeper cleanly caught.
In the 3rd minute Millmoor attacked down the right wing, winning a throw from which Kathryn Smith shielded the ball to the Barnsley goal line before clearing only to the edge of the area where it fell to the Millmoor number 11 but her shot was bravely blocked by Lucy Turner closing down quickly.
Then in the 5th minute Abby Parkin linked up with Drew Greene down the wing, she raced around the defender on the outside reaching the goal line, her cross concerned the keeper who tipped it over the bar. From the corner taken by Abby and Danielle Lowe the ball was passed back to Rebecca Wilson who threaded the ball back to Danielle on the edge of the area, she was nearly tackled but kept her feet to pull back the ball to Brittany Sanderson, with her back to goal she managed to turn and shoot into the net over the keeper 1-0 Barnsley.
8 mins gone and down the left wing Darcie Greene played the ball into Emily Ward, receiving it back, Darcie then found Kathryn Smith in the midfield, who threaded a pass through for Brittany Sanderson whose shot this time was just over the bar.
In the 9th minute Lucy Turner spotted the run of Darcie Greene and played a long ball to the edge of the Millmoor penalty area, she brought it under control and then shot on the turn just wide.
11 mins gone and patience build up play saw Barnsley passing across the field waiting for the chance to open up and attack, when it came the ball was played swiftly through to Drew Greene on the right wing, her cross into the box was met by Holly Findlay heading in Barnsley’s second goal.
From a Barnsley short corner in the 13th min Brittany Sanderson played it to Danielle Lowe, she drove into the box along the goal line beating one defender and from a narrow angle shot, but saved by the goal keeper at her near post.
18 mins gone, Lucy Turner played a ball over the top of the Millmoor midfield and defence, Holly Findlay chased down cutting it back to Kathryn Smith in support who played it back to Holly to try a gentle lob over the keeper, unfortunately just over the bar as well.
Lucy Turner once again played a ball over the top on 20 mins this time to Brittany Sanderson, she drove into the penalty area to shoot just over.
After 21 mins Bryony Hudson played a curved clearance to Emily Ward out on the left wing, she drove forward linking up with Kathryn Smith to release a ball through the Millmoor defence which Drew Greene chased down, unfortunately the keeper got there first.
23 mins Lucy Turner picked out Darcie Greene, she found sister Drew on the diagonal run and a square ball from her found Holly Findlay to tap home, 3-0 Barnsley.
Millmoor were awarded a free kick deep in their half on 25 mins, it was intercepted by the head of Brittany Sanderson to release Holly Findlay to drive at the Millmoor defence, a delightful one two with Darcie Greene and then a lay off pass back to Brittany Sanderson saw her side foot the ball into the top right corner of the net 4-0 Barnsley.
A throw midway in the Millmoor half from Emily Ward to Brittany Sanderson, she picked out Holly Findlay to shoot just over.
Lovely crisp short passing sequence after 30 mins, started by Abby Parkin, into Holly Findlay, out to Drew Greene and then into Brittany Sanderson saw her shot saved, but it rebounded to Darcie Greene to shoot, again saved.
An awkward landing, led to 5 mins of on the pitch treatment to the Millmoor number 3 who was unable to continue replaced by Number 14 after 31 minutes.
42 minutes gone and Bryony Hudson played the ball out from the back into Danielle Lowe, linking up with midfield partner Kathryn Smith the ball was released to Emily Ward on the left, she played a channel ball into Darcie Greene whose long ball was picked up by Drew Greene crossing back to Darcie Greene to score Barnsley’s 5th.
Then on 45mins Darcie Greene drove at the Millmoor defence before pulling the ball back into Kathryn Smith in the penalty D pocket to shoot and score over the head of the keeper. 6-0 Barnsley.
HT 6-0
The Barnsley wingers were both outstripping their markers and on 46 mins this was illustrated when Drew Greene closed down the Millmoor left back to win the ball and beating her on the outside, but the ball just trickled over the goal line before she could cross.
The half ended with Abby Parkin picking out a long ball into Brittany Sanderson, her shot was saved but it came back to Kathryn Smith whose shot beat the keeper but not the cross bar falling to Drew Greene to slot home, unfortunately the offside flag was raised. So half time Barnsley 6-0.
No substitutes at half time but a change in formation with Emily Ward switched from left back to right wing, Darcie Greene asked to play a more central forward position in a 3-2-3-2 line up.
Barnsley we determined not to sit back on their 1st half performance, with good pressure on the Millmoor defence by Drew Greene winning the ball back on 50 mins, she played in Kathryn Smith who shot just over the bar.
53mins gone, Brittany Sanderson played in Drew Greene, she drove through the Millmoor defence but the keeper came out and stood tall to close her down and make the save.
A Barnsley corner on 55 minutes taken by Emily Ward and Danielle Lowe came out to Emily who was nearly closed down but managed to block the ball back into Danielle, she picked out Brittany Sanderson who played the ball back to Danielle Lowe to shoot goal wards taking a slight deflection before rippling the back of the net 7-0 Barnsley.
Bryony Hudson hit a long clearance into space in front of Drew Greene on 57 mins, she chased it down before playing square into the feet of Holly Findlay to tap home for her hat-trick. 8-0 Barnsley.
Drew Greene once again linked up with Holly Findlay threading the ball through the defence after 59 mins, she still had defenders around her but managed to wriggle through but her shot was blocked by a defender on the line, the rebound came to Kathryn Smith who drove in to shoot but it was saved by the diving keeper around her left hand post. From the resulting corner it was played out to Brittany Sanderson who shot and scored her hat-trick from the edge of the area. 9-0 Barnsley.
After 61 mins Kathryn Smith won the ball on half way, she threaded the ball through for Holly Findlay to chase down and shoot just wide, but from the goal kick the ball fell to Holly Findlay who this time released Brittany Sanderson but her shot was also saved.
Changes for Barnsley on 62 mins with all 3 substitutes; Rebecca Fevers, Laura Shepherd and Amy Woodruff coming on to replace Danielle Lowe, Kathryn Smith and Drew Greene.
On 63 mins a throw from Emily Ward into Laura Shepherd, was received back by Emily who drove to the goal line to cross but a little too close to the Keeper who plucked it out of the air before Holly Findlay could reach it.
Then after 65 mins Brittany Sanderson twisted and turned to bamboozled the Millmoor defence before getting her shot away again saved by the keeper.
67 mins and time for another long clearance from Lucy Turner, again chased down by Holly Findlay, she picked out Brittany Sanderson who turned her defender once more to shoot and score 10-0 Barnsley.
Laura Shepherd picked out the run of Holly Findlay after 68 mins but her shot was deflected away for a corner.
70 mins, Drew Greene threaded the ball through to Amy Woodruff but her shot was saved into the feet of the on rushing Emily Ward but she could not strike the ball cleanly and her goal ward effort was cleared by a defender on the goal line.
Then on 77 mins Brittany Sanderson found Rebecca Fevers, she played the ball out to Darcie Greene whose cross was met by the head of Amy Woodruff, 11-0 Barnsley.
78 mins gone and the Millmoor number 11 intercepted a pass in the midfield to release the centre forward down their left wing, she rounded Lucy Turner but Laura Shepherd was covering behind to play it out for a Millmoor corner which Bryony Hudson calmly plucked out of the air before releasing Amy Woodruff who dribble into the Millmoor penalty area before shooting wide.
Then after 80 mins Rebecca Wilson picked up a clearance ball and decided to go on a run, driving through the midfield and past the defence she managed to reach the goal line before crossing just behind Holly Findlay, it fell to Amy Woodruff whose shot was saved but picked up by Holly who was flagged offside.
Rebecca Fevers won the ball in midfield on 81 mins, she passed to Brittany Sanderson then out to Darcie Greene on the left wing, her cross was met cleanly by Holly Findlay to score, 12-0 Barnsley.
83 mins and Brittany Sanderson once again drove at the heart of the Millmoor defence, her shot was saved but the rebound was slotted home by Holly Findlay, unfortunately from an offside position.
Lucy Turner picked out the run of Brittany Sanderson on 85 mins, once again her shot was saved and cleared.
Then after 86 mins Emily Ward released Rebecca Fevers to twist and turn to get her shot away but saved again, the Millmoor keeper was the busiest player on the pitch today.
90 mins gone and Lucy Turner passed out of defence to Emily Ward on the right wing, she drove forward before slotting a channel ball into the path of Amy Woodruff, her shot was palmed away by the keeper into Darcie Greene who shot just over the cross bar.
A Barnsley throw from Darcie Greene to Brittany Sanderson on 92 mins saw a 25 yard shot saved by the keeper for a corner from which Emily Ward picked out Holly Findlay to shoot, but this was also stopped by the keeper, it was recovered by Holly to play it out to Emily Ward to cross back into Amy Woodruff who was just offside.
Final score 12-0 Barnsley with both Holly Findlay and Brittany Sanderson scoring 4 goals each. Some lovely inter passing and movement off the ball had cut open Millmoor defences on many occasions during the match, with good concentration and work rate to limit the number of Millmoor chances.
